MLP elects two new deputy leaders

Dr Anġlu Farrugia and Dr Toni Abela are the two new deputy leaders for the MLP. They were elected Friday night in a runoff that followed the first round of the election on Thursday.

Dr Farrugia, the new deputy leader for parliamentary affairs obtained 535 votes or 64.6 per cent of the vote beating Dr Chris Cardona who polled 293 votes.

Dr Abela, new deputy leader for party affairs, polled 528 votes or 63.8 per cent beating Dr Gavin Gulia who obtained 307 votes.

mlp In a short address to delegates after his success, Dr Farrugia thanked family, delegates and the electoral commission and said that he wants to help new party leader Dr Joseph Muscat to cause an earthquake for the Nationalist Party. On his part, Dr Abela said that he is now ready to roll up his sleeves to work in the interest of the party.

Elections for the appointment of the new deputy leaders of the Labour Party went to Friday’s second round after none of the seven contestants managed to obtain 50% of the votes plus one.

Angelo Farrugia and Chris Cardona contested the runoff for deputy leader parliamentary affairs after they got 409 votes (48%) and 245 votes (29%) respectively on Thursday. Another contestant, Carmelo Abela got 190  of the delegates’ votes (22.5%).

The runoff for deputy leader for party affairs was contested by Toni Abela who obtained 390 votes (46.2%) on Thursday and Gavin Gulia who had managed to get 295 votes (35%). Contestants Joe Mifsud and Clyde Joe Cassar got 149 votes and 10 votes respectively.
