Malta Labour Party leader Joseph Muscat has written to the Prime Minister proposing a number of initiatives with the aim of strengthening democracy.

The letter states that “despite the government’s attitude towards the opposition and several social partners, the MLP was ready, in the national interest, to embark on measures to strengthen democracy.”

The letter, however, does not qualify what is meant by the “government’s attitude ” and lists a number of proposals including; a law on transparent party funding, a law to regulate the functions of a caretaker government, adequate resources for MPs, a change in the appointment and composition of PBS management and editorial boards, discussion on electoral law so that it becomes fairer, an appeal for the implementation of all the recommendations by the Tribunal for the Investigation of Injustice and the Ombudsman especially for those who have suffered injustices in the public sector, government companies and ex-public companies and capping of duties on fuel.

The MLP is ready to take up discussions right away with the exception of electoral law.
