Buses, taxis, minivans and hearses are set to strike indefinitely as from Monday at 0600 CEST following the government’s decision to liberalise the hearse market. The industrial action has been called by the Public Transport Federation.

Private coaches and white minivans will not be striking. In Gozo, public transport wil run as usual.

Meanwhile the Health Department announced that transport arrangements will be made for staff at hospitals, health centres and residences for the elderly.

Transport is being organised from near police stations or parish churches at 0530CEST as well as before the evening shifts. Employees using private transport are being urged to offer lifts to colleagues.

On Sunday, Labour leader Joseph Muscat appealed to the transport federation to call off the public transport strike saying that the people and not the government will suffer the consequences of the industrial action.

Dr Muscat appealed to the government to meet the federation for talks.
