The indicators published by MEPA on the state of the environment are worrying according to Labour spokesman for the environment, Roderick Galdes. He said that some sectors, which are crucial for the quality of life in Malta and Gozo, have still to be controlled so that environmental degradation is controlled.

Among the worrying indicators, the MLP’s statement said there is an increase of air pollution, mismanagement of land use, an increase in waste and the impact of Malta’s dependency on motor vehicles which is caused by transport problems.

Moreover, MEPA’s indicators ignore the situation with alternative energy which is being neglected.

On a more positive key, the statement refers to a positive increase in afforestation efforts, recycling of waste, investments in the eko-skola project and a reduction in sulphur dioxides and benzene in the air.
