MLP elects its "new" administration

The new administration of the Malta Labour Party is being headed by Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi as president with Jason Micallef being re-elected as secretary general. The election was held on Monday evening after an extraordinary general conference at the MLP headquarters in Hamrun.

Zrinzo Azzopardi won the post by 593 votes against Wenzu Mintoff’s 235.

Similarly, Louis Gatt was re-elected vice-president with 459 votes against Alexander Sciberras’s 373 votes.

Jason Micallef was re-elected by 370 votes with contenders Alfred Grixti, Joe Vella Bonnici  and Keith Grech gaining 229, 224 and 14 votes respectively.

With 457 votes, Joseph Cordina became the new secretary for finance beating contenders Jeffrey Camilleri, Frans Chircop and Tommy Dimech who got 155, 115 and 109 votes.

Ray Azzopardi was uncontested as public relations officer.

Alex Sciberras Trigona won the post of secretary for International Affairs beating contenders Joe Mifsud and Lorna Vassallo with 436votes against their 380 and 23 respectively.

The MLP’s new Education Secretary is Aaron Farrugia who, with 637 votes, prevailed over Anthony Degiovanni’s 197 votes.

Labour Leader Joseph Muscat told delegates before the elections that he appreciated the great solidarity that the family of Dr Karl Chircop, the MLP spokesperson for Health, received from all quarters of Maltese society.  Dr Chircop was hospitalized on the night between Sunday and Monday and was in a critical condition.

The MLP general conference will meet again on Tuesday evening to elect the party executive.
