Media reports are pointing to a member of Joseph Muscat's core campaign team during the leadership race, James Piscopo, as the man earmarked for the new post of MLP chief executive officer.

The news was known to only a small number of Labour insiders, but it was leaked to the PN media on Wednesday.

James Piscopo, who turned 30 in May, has not confirmed or denied the news, saying only that his top priority at present is his family. His wife gave birth to their first daughter, Julia, last Sunday.

Dr Muscat did not deny that Mr Piscopo's eventual appointment, but would neither confirm the news. "I will announce the CEO as well as other key posts in due course," he said.

Despite having been part of Dr Muscat's core group during the leadership campaign, Mr Piscopo had never before really cooperated closely with the Labour leader. He was re-introduced to him shortly before the race started and the two hit it off immediately.

Mr Piscopo was previously very active within the Labour Party and headed the youth section before he broke ties around 2004, as a result of disgruntlement with Alfred Sant and Jason Micallef. Before the leadership race, Mr Piscopo had never worked closely with Dr Muscat.

Mr Piscopo’s recent absence from the party is regarded as an asset, since he is not seen as belonging to any faction.
