On Thursday, Labour Leader Joseph Muscat, wrote to the President of the European Parliament, Hans Poettering,  and to the President of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, Martin Schulz,  informing them that he is relinquishing his post as Member of the European Parliament.

This resignation comes about following him being co-opted in the Maltese Parliament as leader of the Opposition.

In his letter to Schulz, he said “As the new Leader of the Labour Party, I wish to assure you that in us you will find a trusted and committed Social-Democrat partner.”

“We will work to meet and surpass the environmental, social, economic and European aspirations of all our people.  Labour will be the cornerstone of a new Movement of Progressives and Moderates who share a common vision for Malta and Europe. “
