Labour Spokesman for Education, Evarist Bartolo, said that it is ridiculous that the government is only to start investigating the rise in school transport fees now, a number of months after it was known that these would increase by at least 15%.

Bartolo’s statement came as Finance Minister Tonio Fenech asked the Office for Fair Competition to investigate the issue.

It was over five months ago that Tonio Fenech asked the same office to investigate the prices of school uniforms, school books and educational materials and it had been expected that this investigation would have been closed before the beginning of the new scholastic year. This has not happened, Bartolo said.

According to Bartolo, this reflects insensitivity on the part of the government to the financial difficulties that parents have to face together with the rise in the cost of living.
