vote counting The Malta Labour Party has won the Local Council Elections with 53.2% of the vote.   The Nationalist Party (PN) obtained 43.89%, Alternattiva Demokratika 2.15% while independent candidates got less than 1% of the votes.

Thus the MLP made gains over its 50.2% obtained in 2004 while the PN lost ground from its 46.4%.

First count votes confirmed that PN has lost Gż ira, Mosta and Xagħ ra to the MLP while the latter has retained its majorities.  PN retained majority in Safi with a few votes in the 7th count and also managed to stave off the threat of the AD candidate in Munxar to keep the third councillor and thus the majority.  AD elected two councillors, one in Swieqi and one in Attard.

The MLP could have also won Floriana after an independent candidate seemed to lose his seat for just one vote in favour of an MLP candidate but the Electoral Commission had to review the counting on request of the interested candidates. The Commission's decision on vote transfer meant that Nigel Holland, the independent candidate, was elected instead of the MLP candidate.  Nevertheless the MLP obtained 49% of the vote.

Floriana, Gżira, Marsaxlokk, Mosta, Paola, Swieqi, and Xagħra will have new mayors.

This is the the final result of the elections in 22 localities (number of councillors elected):
