Malta commemorates Freedom Day

Freedom Day is commemorated on Saturday in Malta and Gozo, marking its 28th anniversary of the departure of the last British forces from the island.

On Saturday morning the Band of the Armed Forces of Malta and the Guards of Honour assembled in Gavino Gulia Square, Cospicua where they performed the traditional march along the strand before arriving in front of the Freedom Monument at Vittoriosa.

His Excellency President of Dr Edward Fenech Adami inspected the Guards of Honour. The President and Prime Minister Dr Lawrence Gonzi then presented flowers at the foot of the Monument which depicts the departure of the British Forces from Malta to the sound of the Fanfare.

The Malta Labour Party also laid wreath of flowers at the foot of the Birgu monument on Saturday morning.

In the afternoon the traditional Regatta was held at the Grand Harbour. Starting at 1400 CET, boat race competitions in various categories took place.  At the end of the Regatta, Minister Zammit Dimech presented the much-contested shield to the winning club.
