Maltapost employees to follow industrial actions

Maltapost employees are set to follow a number of industrial actions as from Wednesday.  These are resultant of an industrial dispute over a new collective agreement.

In a press release on Tuesday, the Union Haddiema Maghqudin (UHM) said that the industrial actions will take place since as yet the Maltapost management has not withdrawn its proposals.   

The UHM cannot accept that the management treats its workers arrogantly and adds pressure by changing a number of favourable work conditions,” the press release states while not excluding that more industrial actions might be added if the management remains hard-headed.

The industrial actions will constitute the following:

• Workers will not answer phones, emails or faxes; Postal operators will not carry out duties in connection with voting documents;
• Postal operators will not distribute un-addressed mail;
• Senior administrators will not carry out work in connection with and related to un-addressed mail;
• Senior administrators will not give management any information with regards to the industrial dispute;
• Workers within the Courier section will not take up money;
• Collectors will not collect boxes in the evenings;
• The Courier section will not work overtime;
• Workers in the retail section will not carry out duties in connection with voting documents.

The directives were agreed upon in conjunction with a committee representative of Maltapost employees. The Maltapost Chief Executive was informed about the industrial actions by the Public Entities Section of the UHM on Tuesday.

Meanwhile on Monday, the Ministry for Investment, Industry and Information Technology (MIIIT) said that Maltapost was surprised of the registering of an industrial dispute.   Two other meetings were scheduled for the 2nd and 9th February 2007 and confirmed also on Sunday evening by UHM Deputy General Secretary Mr Jesmond Bonello.
