Michael Zammit Cutajar has been elected Vice-Chair for 2008 and Chair for 2009 of the new negotiating group of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Zammit Cutajar is a Maltese climate expert who holds the position of Malta ambassador for climate change. He was appointed member of the National Order of Merit during the Republic Day celebrations last Thursday.

Environment Minister George Pullicino congratulated Zammit Cutajar saying that his new post will bring satisfaction to the Maltese community because it continues to reaffirm Malta’s extraordinary contribution to the global fight against climate change.

The Minister said that the Bali Conference for Heads of States has shown that climate change negotiations are delicate and intense and that Malta will continue to lead in this important undertaking that faces the next generation.

“Even though you are faced with such a sensitive challenge, I am confident that your credentials will see you overcome the challenges and for an acceptable compromise that should, hopefully result in an agreement at the COP 15 meeting that will be held in Copenhagen, in December 2009.” added the Minister while also pledging his support ti Zammit Cutajar’s efforts.
