Opposition Leader and Leader of the Malta Labour Party Dr Alfred Sant together with the party leadership tried to visit the Magħtab waste facility.  They were denied access by security officers who said a Wastserv permit was needed to be allowed in.

The Environment Ministry said that the site had been closed and the trucks shown to journalists were actually going to the nearby engineered landfill, which uses the same entrance.

The ministry also said that most of the 2,000 recently planted trees at Maghtab were doing well. Some trees did have problems, the ministry conceded, but those problems were under control.

Wastserv also reacted by saying "WasteServ has organised Open Days for the public in the recent past and has also coordinated scheduled press activities, always after receiving requests in advance, so as the necessary precautionary measures can be taken, in the interests of safety."

In a press conference at Bulebel industrial estate on Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said that unemployment would rise by 3,000 if the Labour party are elected to government whilst his government had registered records in the number of gainfully employed and that the new jobs were in the private sector and not eve-of-election handouts.

Dr Gonzi attributed these successes to EU membership which he said created new opportunities.  He also said the Labour Party was trying to forget its brief stint in government when unemployment and deficit had risen.

In a meeting with the Malta Employers’ Association, Leader of Azzjoni Nazzjonali Dr Josie Muscat said that AN wanted to cut red tape for businesses and provide incentives for the creation of wealth. He also stated that the government should be reduced in size with a maximum of four ministers.
During a press conference, the Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika, Dr Harry Vassallo, said that AD will always support victims of urban disturbances and injustices as its record bears witness to.

He said AD favoured the re-introduction of the residents’ consent before the issue of a trading licence for businesses which are in residential zones. Dr Vassallo said that “we are all residents and we all deserve” a better quality of life.
