In a statement to the media, the MLP said that a joint meeting of the MLP parliamentary group and the executive decided Tuesday night that the party general conference will meet on June 5 to elect a new leader.

Dr Charles Mangion will be acting leader until June. An election for deputy leaders will be held on June 12.

The executive and the parliamentary group also expressed their appreciation to Alfred Sant who resigned the leadersip following the general election defeat on March 8. They stated that his 16 years of leadership were based on honesty, integrity and truth.

The meeting of the MLP parliamentary group and the executive also discussed which seats will be ceded by candidates elected from two districts. It was decided that Dr Sant will give up the 8th district, Michael Falzon the 2nd, Charles Mangion the 6th, Helena Dalli the 3rd, George Vella the 5th and Evarist Bartolo the 10th.

In these districts, the candidates most likely to make it to Parliament are Joe Debono Grech (8), Owen Bonnici or Rita Law (3), Silvio Chetcuti (6), Joe Sammut (5), Joe Vella Bonnici or Chris Agius (2) and Joseph Cuschieri (10).

The meeting also decided to commission an internal report to assess the result of  the general election by a group of persons who the party has not yet identified.
