On advice of Attorney General Dr. Silvio Camillieri, the
Prime Minister Dr. Lawrence Gonzi has called on the General Director of
Contracts to halt and cancel the tender process for the Mater Dei Hospital Integrated
Health Information System (IHIS).
The tender process has been at the centre of controversy
after a member of the evaluation committee was suspected of leaking
confidential information to an interested candidate without authorization.
In his view issued on Friday, the Attorney General said that the process of the tender is tainted and should be cancelled. This viewpoint was backed by Parliament on Monday.
Earlier this month, Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani ruled that
there is enough evidence to indict two men involved in the leaking of tender
information for the Information Technology system installation contract at the
new hospital.
42-year-old Noel Xuereb from St. Julians was charged with
accepting bribes, embezzlement, taking a private interest in the adjudication
of tenders and disclosing professional secrets when he served as a public
officer. 47-year-old Pierre Mercieca from Attard
was in turn charged with bribing Mr Xuereb and
with complicity.
