Malta, Libya experts to discuss oil exploration

Libya said that it is prepared to discuss the possibility of oil exploration with Malta. The announcement emerged during the twenty-fourth joint committee meeting between the two countries which was held in the recent days.

 

oil rigMalta and Libya agreed that experts form both countries are to meet in Malta in April to discuss and identify opportunities for cooperation in the sector. In turn, June 2007 will see Maltese and Libyan representatives meeting in the island to discuss a mechanism for cooperation on illegal immigration. Libyan Minister for Public Security Salah Rajab Al-Masmari was also invited to visit the island and engage in important discussions in this regard.

Specialized Libyan workers are also to receive training in search and rescue operations in Malta, following an agreement stuck between the two parties during the meeting.  In   April a workshop on search and rescue will be held for this purpose., Additionally, Malta has submitted a draft cooperation agreement on search and rescue. Libya is expected to give its reaction to the draft agreement by June.

During the session, the two countries discussed various topics of both bilateral and international interest. Among the topics for discussion were also education, culture and information.

The Maltese delegation was led by Minister for Foreign Affairs Michael Frendo.
