Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has said that he is willing to discuss any subject which enhances democracy in Malta such as the right to vote of those Maltese living abroad.

He stated this in reply to Dr Joseph Muscat’s letter sent to him on Monday outlining a number of proposals aimed at strengthening democracy.   Dr Gonzi also beefed up his reply by a number of new items to be discussed including having a single National Day, better regulation of the political broadcasting stations or a revision of the role of political parties in the media.

In another point Gonzi proposes a reform of the Broadcasting Authority to end the dominance of the political parties and enhance the participation of experts in broadcasting. He also proposed to discuss revising the Constitution to reflect current realities and the implementation of the second phase of the pension reform.

Dr Gonzi’s letter however laments the fact that the Opposition has only replied to one of the points previously raised in correspondence with Dr Alfred Sant on April 21st, namely, resources to MPs.

The Prime Minister’s letter concludes by suggesting that discussions are initiated on the most urgent subjects as outlined in the mentioned correspondence.
