Crime in
Malta in 2006 dropped by 11%, and is continuing to decline in 2007, said Commissioner of Police John Rizzo on Thursday, while addressing a press conference.
During the conference, the Commissioner also made reference to the murder of a 25-year-old Russian national earlier during the month and explained the investigations are at a delicate stage. The Commissioner also said that Police are inclined to believe that the death of 18-year-old Christian Camilleri was accidental.
The youth had gone missing in December after a minor traffic accident in Ba©¤ar iċ-Cag©¤aq and remains were found
in a quarry in the limits of Naxxar in February.
While confirming that case has not been closed, the Commissioner explained that Police are seeking expert advice to back up their perception of the incident.
Commissioner Rizzo also called for harsher sentences for persons arraigned in Court in relation to prostitution.
The Commissioner also announced the launch of a new telephone number, 119, which will allow citizens to communicate information about criminal acts to Police. Calling the number is free of charge and the service can be used anonymously.
Furthermore, in the upcoming weeks, the public will also be able to further such information to Police via a free-of-charge Short Message Service (SMS) or via e-mail.
