Further investigations concerning a newborn baby abandoned in Cospicua on Sunday afternoon are underway, with Police questioning the child’s 19-year-old mother.

It has been established that the young woman gave birth to the child unassisted in a residence in the same city, reported Radio 101. However it is unclear whether it was the mother who placed the baby boy in a cardboard box and abandoned him in Triq Guliermu.

The baby was found by two girls and a boy playing in the area at around 1530CET. One of the girls informed Police at the Cospicua Station of the discovery immediately. The infant was around two hours old when it was discovered, with the umbilical cord still attached.

Police managed to trace the baby’s mother after receiving information from the young woman’s family.

While the young mother is being examined by a psychologist, the baby is still receiving treatment in St. Luke’s Hospital.

A detailed analysis must be carried out to evaluate whether the mother and child should be reunited or whether the child should be put into care, reported Radio 101.
