An explosion occurred at the MultiGas Complex in Kirkop on Tuesday morning when a gas cylinder blew up during the compression. The ceiling of the complex was extensively damaged.

Fortunately the employees were during break and no one was injured.

Following the explosion, all the production was stopped. All precautions and measures were taken to clear any other possible danger.

Residents of nearby towns who heard the explosion said the blast was so strong they thought a fireworks factory had blown up. Further Police investigations are under way.

Meanwhile in a press release, Multigas confirmed that the accident was caused during the filling of a compressed air cylinder. "This process represents a very minimal part of the company’s activity. It is abundantly clear that the failure was not in any part of the plant processes or the oxygen cylinders filling station," the press release stated.

The company along with external experts, is conducting more intensive investigations, Multigas said.

The company also stated that the compressed air filling station will not be in use until conclusive findings are reached as to the cause of the incident.
