Freeport architect Joe Bugeja along with Polidano group contractors Charles Polidano, Salvu Ellul and Anthony Bezzina were arraigned in court on Friday and charged with the illegal dumping of construction waste at sea during summer 2005.

The four men claimed that the activities carried out in the vicinity of the Freeport were covered by a permit issued by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) twelve years ago.

However the Prosecution led by Inspector Alex Miruzzi explained how the permit does not cover the dumping of waste at sea. The Inspector added that the waste, dumped in the vicinty of the Freeport had led to various complaints, which were also communicated to the MEPA.

The Court was presided over by Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani Grima.
