Customs seize contraband alcohol and tobacco

Contraband good April 2007An amount of tobacco was seized from a van following a search by the Customs Reinforcement Team. The van was in the hawkers’ area around Rabat from which contraband tobacco and cigarettes were being sold. This team intensified the efforts and led to further investigation in three garages in Bugibba.

Inside one of the garages belonging to the van’s owner who is a Bugibba resident, 1523 cardboard boxes each containing 200 cigarettes together with 3,408 tobacco packets were found.

Contraband goods April 2007103 bottles of 1 litre of alcohol were also discovered. It appears no tax had been paid on all the cigarettes and spirits retrieved. This means a tax evasion of around LM18,000. The van and all the goods were confiscated by the Customs officials.

Police investigations continue.
