Youth sentenced to jail on involuntary manslaughter

Antoine Cassar, 24 from Zurrieq, accused with the involuntary manslaughter of five youths from Qrendi was sentenced to three years imprisonment and five years suspension of his driving license after he was found guilty of the charges presses against him. The man will also be paying for all the Court’s expenses on the case.

The five youths Mark Abdilla, 17, Fabio Magro, 16, Oswald Vella, 18, Christian Camilleri 18 and David Sacco, 13 lost their lives in a traffic accident in Mdina Road in Zebbug in October 2005 while the accused was driving them home after a barbeque.

Besides the involuntary manslaughter of the five youths, Cassar was also accused of driving excessively and for carrying on board the van more than the number permitted as listed on the log book.

Antoine Cassar is expected to appeal the Court’s decision.

The clean conduct of the accused was taken in consideration when the sentence was handed down.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera presided over the case.
