In a statement the Ministry said that between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning vandals destroyed up to 3,000 small trees which were planted by school children and companies through the 34U scheme and donation from the Italian government.

Works on the site have been underway for four years.

Most of the trees were uprooted or bent while a number of them were sawn in half. It is believed that vandal attack was organised by a group of persons.

A number of rubble walls were also targeted during the attack.
