Three elderly people involved in accidents

Two elderly persons died and a third was seriously injured in separate accidents which took place in the recent days. 

The most recent accident occurred on Friday morning just before 0800CEST, when an 80-year-old Żabbar man was run over in St James Square in his hometown.

He was hit by a vehicle driven by a 20-year-old man, also from Żabbar.  The elderly man was rushed to St Luke’s Hospital where he was certified to have sustained serious injuries. However he is not on danger-list.

On Thursday night a 78-year-old Żejtun woman died in similar circumstances when she was also run over in her hometown in Alfredo Cachia Zammit Street.

She was hit by a car driven by a 24-year-old man. She was certified dead on the spot.  

Police were informed of the case at around 2230CEST.  

Duty Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera was informed of the case and appointed various experts to assist in an inquiry.

A 72-year-old Qala farmer also died on Thursday after an accident while ploughing a field in the limits of his hometown on Tuesday.

According to The Times of Malta, the former police sergeant was initially taken to Gozo General Hospital, however due to the nature of his serious injuries he was later transferred to St Luke's Hospital in Malta.

Police are still trying to ascertain the circumstances of the accident.
