The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) was called to assist a Tunisian fishing vessel after a group of 22 illegal immigrants took control of the boat 90 miles south-west of Malta and 43 nautical miles from the Italian island of Lampedusa.

After the call was made on Thursday evening, two patrol boats were dispatched to assist in the operation and the illegal immigrants, among them nine women and two children, were taken aboard a Tunisian military vessel.

A further 25 illegal immigrants who remained on the boat they had set off their journey on were taken aboard another Tunisian military vessel.
