Almost 200 boxes containing bottled alcoholic beverages were intercepted by Customs Officials in the early hours of Tuesday. The alcohol was illegally smuggled into Malta.

The boxes, which were brought to Malta on a catamaran that left Sicily on Monday night, were intercepted as they were being unloaded off a trailer in Qormi. The 198 boxes contained 1,188 bottles of alcohol including whisky, vodka and rum.

The trailer was also packed with 3,000 packets of toilet paper, detergents and mineral water.

All the goods, along with the trailer, were seized by the Customs.

Police were informed of the case.
