An AFM delegation has just returned from a two-day meeting in Tripoli, Libya.  The intent of this meeting was to discuss the possibility of initiating a process at the end of which an agreement on cooperation in the field of Search and Rescue is reached between Malta and Libya.

The Maltese delegation arrived in Tripoli harbour on Tuesday onboard the AFM’s Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) P-61, where it was met by the Head of the Libyan delegation.

Talks between the two delegations were very cordial and intense.  In fact, the talks took longer than envisaged.  During this meeting, there was an initial exchange of views on the Maltese proposal with regards to a Memorandum of Understanding with Libya on Cooperation in the field of Search and Rescue.  There was also a very keen interest from the Libyan side about the possibility of having Libyan officials attend training at the AFM’s Search and Rescue Training Centre.

The Libyan delegation visited P-61 and was shown around by the ship’s captain.  P-61 returned to Malta on Thursday morning.

Maltese Ambassador to Libya , Dr. Joe Cassar was also present for the discussions.
