Twenty-five migrants are feared drowned off the coast of Malta after their boat capsized as a rescue mission was approaching.

On Thursday, the missing migrants were among 28 on a small open boat which was intercepted by a Greek tug in the early hours, 72 miles south of the island.

It seems that as the Greek tug went closer to the boat, the migrants moved to one side and the boat capsized in choppy seas.

Only three were recovered by the tug. The missing are 21 men and four women.

A Maltese military aircraft joined the search at dawn along with a patrol boat.

The three survivors were transferred to a patrol boat and landed in Malta on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, on Friday at around 1230 CET, eleven illegal immigrants were brought to shore at Haywharf.

The group consisted of eight men and three women.
