Thirty-six-year-old Brian Vella who was accused of murdering an elderly St Lucija couple back in February 2000, has been found guilty after an all-male jury deliberated for nine hours on Thursday.

Judge Joseph Galea Debono sentenced him to life in prison.  Defence lawyers are expected to appeal.

Vella was found guilty of the murders of Ġiġi and Ġuza Grima by six counts to three in both cases. He was also found guilty of theft from the couple's residence by seven votes to two.

Vella's trial commenced for the third time on Monday.
Mr Vella’s two other trials, in February 2004, and January 2006 were dissolved due to technical errors in the judicial proceedings.
