Godfrey Ellul jailed18 years for drug trafficking

A jury has found 59 year-old Godfrey Ellul guilty of drug possession and trafficking with a verdict of 7-2 following five hours of deliberation and has been sentenced to 18 years imprisonment and a  LM18,000 fine.

He had pleaded not guilty to trafficking in cocaine and cannabis resin and the possession of both drugs with the intent to sell them between December 2001 and July 2002. On another three smaller counts, Ellul, from St Julian’s was found guilty with a verdict of eight votes against one.

Mr. Justice Joe Galea Debono presided over the jury. Lawyer Anthony Barbara, the head of the Attorney General's prosecution unit prosecuted while lawyer Joseph Brincat was defence counsel.
