A 59-year old man from Bugibba was arraigned in court on Monday evening and charged with the cold-blooded murder of Louis Ellul in front of the Pembroke Church on Sunday.

Martino Gatt was also charged of injuring a 14-year old girl and possessing a firearm without the necessary police permits.

While the defendant pleaded not guilty he was denied bail and Magistrate Edwina Grima remanded him in custody.

Richard Sladden is leading the defence.

The murder occurred just before noon Sunday when Ellul was shot just after he went out of the Pembroke church together with his partner, who happens to be the estranged wife of the accused, and her three children.   Ellul died on the spot while Gatt was captured some later by the police while on the run.
