Young couple admit to trying to sell their baby

A man and a woman have pleaded guilty before court to having tried to give their baby to third parties in exchange for money.

The mother is a 23-year-old woman from Valletta whereas the father is a 24-year-old man of Libyan citizenship residing in St. Paul’s Bay.  Both admitted to the accusation.

The mother was conditionally discharged for two years and placed under probation whilst the father,  who was also found guilty of relapsing, was fined €300.

Inspectors Louise Calleja and Melvyn Camilleri prosecuted, while Dr Anglu Farrugia and Dr Edward Gatt appeared for the accused.

The baby was born on December 1st 2007 and the attempt to sell him was made on Friday morning.
 
The case was heard behind closed doors before Magistrate Antonio Mizzi and the Court ruled that the names of the accused should not be published.
