A Maltese emigrant has been jailed after making more than 3600 eccentric calls to the emergency 000 number back in Australia, The Age reported. Fifty-one-year-old Charlie Vella made the calls between May 27, 2005, and December 27, 2007.

Vella, who was usually drunk and abusive to call-takers, was initially arrested on August 1 last year, charged and had his mobile phone seized. He rang 000 again two days later on a new phone, asking where he could get his old phone back.

The Age reported that Vella was jailed for three months but started making more 000 calls after his release and was re-arrested. He is now serving a four-month jail term.
