A powerful explosion in Triq Hal Dghejf, Naxxar, claimed two lives, a woman and a man, 33 and 57 respectively, whilst another three victims were injured.

Police reports confirmed that the explosion happened at around 1100CET on Wednesday and is likely that it was caused by illegal fireworks.

The woman is a 33-year-old mother of two who had just returned home from the morning shopping when the blast happened.  Her body was found in the early hours of Thursday morning.  She had been buried under the rubble for almost 18 hours.

The other victim, Paul Camilleri, was in his garage at the time of the incident.

Buildings have collapsed and the police claimed that there are a number of injured persons, besides the two confirmed fatalities.  Whilst ambulances have rushed a number of victims to hospital, members of the Civil Protection department are on site looking for other victims under the rubble.

The first victim of the tragedy was Paul Camilleri.

Speculation ran wild as fears of another fireworks factory explosion, similar to the recent Gharghur explosion which had claimed five lives , re-surfaced amongst the people living in the vicinities.
