An elderly woman was earlier on Saturday found dead in the well of her residence in Zurrieq, the police said in a statement.

The woman, 64, was found drowned in the well by her own son at around 1100CET when he called on her.  The incident took place at Triq is-Sajjieda Zurrieq and preliminary investigations have as yet revealed no signs of violence or foul play.

It does not seem that anyone tried to break in her house but a wooden lid for the well was found broken.

Further details and the cause of her death are expected to be revealed in an autopsy.

Investigations are underway.
