Suspended jail term for admitting sex offence

A former teacher of religion was given a two-year jail term suspended for four years after admitting to soliciting two boys, 13 and 14 years old, to sex via internet chatting and SMS messages.
The man, 37, the school and the minors cannot be named by court order in order to protect the identity of the accused and that of the victims. Magistrate Silvio Meli who handed the sentence also ordered that the man be disqualified from being given a teacher’s warrant.
The incidents happened in the last few weeks and despite the man’s solicitous messages the minors involved did not respond in the same tone.
Inspector Louise Calleja for the prosecution said that the former teacher’s messages carried sexual allusions but were not in any way propagated by the children. Moreover, the accused is still being investigated in connection to other similar charges.
Dr Joseph Giglio, for the defence said that his client did send the messages but no physical abuse ever took place.
