A man and a youth were arraigned in court on Tuesday in
relation to a shooting which left an Eritrean refugee seriously injured last
Friday. 37-year-old Aserom Belayterlit was shot in the leg at around
05:00CET in Xatt il-Mollijiet, Marsa.
47-year-old Raymond Magri was charged with
shooting a firearm within 200 meters of a residential area.
The 17-year-old
youth, whose name cannot be published, was in turn charged with seriously
injuring the Eritrean national.
Both men were also charged with carrying a firearm without
the required permit, while Raymond Magri was alone accused of relapsing.
The incident took place shortly after the Eritrean man and
the two Maltese nationals were involved in an argument comprising two groups.
The Maltese man and youth,
both from Valletta
were place under house arrest against a Lm1,000 deposit and a Lm5,000
personal guarantee each.
Magistrate Audrey Demicoli presided over the Court.
