At 0700CET on Tuesday morning, the Armed Forces of Malta's Operations' Centre at Luqa Barracks was informed that the Italian Coast Guard vessel CP 904 Fiorillo had just rescued some 20 illegal migrants who were in distress at sea. They have also recovered a corpse.

It is not yet known or established if the corpse is from the same group of migrants and what the state of health of the main group is.

The Fiorillo is a Diciotti-Saettia class Offshore-Patrol-Vessel (OPV) of the same class as the AFM's own P-61, and was only last week here in Malta participating on the annual bi-lateral exercise "Canale" 2008.  The CP 904 is at present on patrol in connnection with the blue-fin tuna fishing quotas enforcement and inspections underway for the EU regulating body.

The migrants in distress were rescued in a position 56 nautical miles South of Malta.

The Fiorillo is expected to berth later today in Malta at the AFM's Haywharf Base in Pieta`.
