27 illegal immigrants of Somali origin were brought ashore on Thursday morning at around 0530CET.

The migrants’ boat was reported to the Maritime Squadron of the Armed Forces of Malta who dispatched two patrol boats to assist the immigrants.

Earlier on Wednesday evening, at around 1829CET the AFM's Operations' Centre at Luqa Barracks received a report from the tugboat AKWADEM 2 that a small boat full of illegal migrants had capsized in their position, 36NM south of Malta, and that they had commenced a rescue operation.

An AFM Air Wing Alouette rescue-helicopter was immediately scrambled to the scene, as the AKWADEM 2's crew reported that had rescued 26 migrants of whom 4 required urgent medical attention.

Moreover, between 1943-2005CET the Alouette helicopter had winched down a recuer on the tugboat and taken back onboard a casualty who was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital.

Later, another rescue-helicopter of the Italian Military Mission in Malta was also dispatched to the scene.

The Italian Air Force AB-212 helicopter took onboard another two casualties who were conveyed to Mater Dei Hospital at 2120CET. Simultaneously, AFM Maritime Squadron's Swift-class patrolbaot P-23 made a mid-sea rendezvous with the AKWADEM 2 for the remaining rescued migrants to be taken onboard.
