Over 24,600 cigarettes and 756 bottles of alcohol, on which duty had not been paid, have been found in the last few weeks, the Customs department said in a statement published on Wednesday.

These were found in a number of commercial establishments following some 150 searches both in Malta and Gozo.

In June, Customs’ Officers inspected bars, restaurants and other establishments, including green grocers where in 37 cases contraband alcohol and cigarettes were retrieved. These have an estimated evasion amount of over €10,000.
