A number of personal belonging including a mobile phone and a necklace, found in a quarry in the limits of Naxxar on Thursday, are leading Police to believe that human remains discovered in the same area a day earlier belong to missing 18-year-old youth Christian Camilleri.

A group of workers uncovered dismembered remains in unused parts of the quarry on Wednesday. The remains are believed to have been originally been lodged between the foot of the rock face, and an old mound of sand, making it virtually impossible to locate. It is thought that parts of the body were dragged along the quarry by a pack of dogs.

Sources told The Times of Malta that the police immediately suspected the remains belonged to the youth, who was last seen walking up It-Telgha t'Alla w'Ommu at around 0600CET approximately 30 minutes after he was involved in a minor traffic accident on the Coast Road near Għallis.

The young man from Wardija was on his way home after a night out in Paceville when the Landover Freelander he was driving skidded off the road. He was unhurt and the vehicle sustained only minor damage. Soon after the accident the young man called his parents who picked him up on the site of the accident. However soon after boarding his parents vehicle, the youngster instead that they drop him off so he could carry on with his journey towards home on foot.

Tests on the bones and an examination of the teeth can make the identification more accurate, according to The Times of Malta. It is not excluded that DNA tests could also be carried out. A postmortem examination was not possible because only bones were found.

Police sources also told The Times of Malta   that the circumstances in which the human remains were found made it difficult to establish whether the person was thrown, fell or ended down there under some other circumstance. Police are still keeping all options open, however they seem to be discounting foul play, because Christian Camilleri was "disturbed" at the time he went missing.

Clinical forensic physician Mario Scerri has been appointed as an expert to assist in the inquiry.

Police Inspectors Christopher Pullicino and Louise Calleja are heading the investigations.
