Late on Thursday night some 30 illegal migrants managed to make it to Xlendi Bay in Gozo.

In a statement, the police said that when it went on site to investigate the group of immigrants started moving out of the bay and it was then that it called for assistance from the Armed Forces of Malta.

The group consisted of 28 men and 2 females, and were reported to the Armed Forces of Malta's Operations' Centre by the Gozo Police at 2350CET.

All wearing life jackets, the migrants were immediately taken into custody by the AFM's Maritime Squadron Bremse-class patrolboat P-32.  Other soldiers from 1 Regiment's Gozo Troop stationed in the Qortin tan-Nadur Base were also employed alongside volunteers of the Malta Red Cross' Gozo Branch at Mgarr harbour, where the migrants' boat finally berthed.

Subsequently, the migrants were all escorted to the Maritime Squadron's base at Haywharf, Floriana.
