Over 100 illegal immigrants are being escorted to Maltese shores by an Italian Navy Warship, the AFM said in a press release on Sunday afternoon.

The Vega took the 101 illegal migrants onboard after they requested assistance due to the inclement weather off the isle of Lampedusa. The group consists of 87 males, ten females and four children.

The Vega is expected to enter Maltese territorial waters at around 1830 CEST and to anchor in a sheltered area one mile off Delimara point so as to allow a mid-sea transfer of the migrants onto the AFM Maritime Squadron's Protector-class vessel P-52.

The migrants are expected to be landed at the Maritime Squadron Haywharf Base later on Sunday night.

Earlier on Sunday morning, a group of 28 illegal immigrants landed in the area between Ghar Lapsi and Hagar Qim.

Meanwhile, the AFM rescued the sole passenger of a cabin cruiser which sank on Sunday at around 0835 CEST some 1.5 nautical miles off the Marsaxlokk Harbour.

The skipper-owner of the Domana sent a distress message to the AFM. The man was later conveyed back to Haywharf base after his condition was ascertained.
