In the first two months of 2007, Customs officials
seized 19 containers carrying over half a million counterfeit products.
Among the products seized were wrist
watches, cell phone accessories, batteries, razor blades, clothes, belts and
spectacles, all bearing counterfeit brand names. The containers originated from
the
Far East, however the Customs Office
stated that it is difficult to determine where the fake merchandise was headed.
Only one container was destined for
Malta. The goods will be destroyed once the legal
proceedings against the perpetrators come to an end.
The Customs office said that the finds were
made through intensive efforts of various sections within the department.
The Customs office also said that it has
had numerous requests for heighten protection of leading brands.
Earlier this
year, Secretary General of the World Customs Michel Danet said that the
production of fake good is a very serious crime which can have long-lasting
effects on the economy as well as the health of citizens. The production of
fake merchandise is also no longer limited to a specific group of goods and has
spread to affect various products from infants’ food to aeroplane machines.
