First accident of the year puts youth on danger list

The first day of the New Year has already been marred with a traffic accident which has put a 19-year-old Naxxar youth on the danger list. The accident happened in Tower Road, Sliema on Monday at around 0445 CET.
Police preliminary investigations revealed that a Fiat Uno driven by a 22-year-old San Gwann youth and a Transit Van driven by a 61-year-old man from Rabat collided into each other for some reason or another.
The 19-year-old youth from Naxxar and another 19-year-old youth from Kappara were passengers in the Fiat Uno.
Members of the Civil Protection Department were called on site to get the youths out of the car. Am ambulance took them and the van driver to St Lukes Hospital where the 19-year-old passenger in the Fiat Uno was certified to be in danger of dying.
The other three persons suffered light injuries.
Both vehicles were extensively damaged.
Magistrate Dr Joseph Cassar was informed about the accident and appointed several experts to help him in the inquiry.
The police are still investigating.
In turn, on a more positive note, the first day of 2007 saw the arrival of one child, a baby boy born to a Żejtun family. The child was born in St James Hospital, Żabbar at 0900CET. No other births have been reported to have taken place in any other hospitals in the Maltese islands since.
