Two large drug finds were made on Thursday evening. One kilogramme of cocaine was found in a car in Pembroke, while another 1.5 kilogrammes heroin was seized at the Malta International Airport (MIA).
Police had been investigating both cases intensively in the recent weeks.
In the first case, Police stopped two men in a car near the Luxol grounds after weeks of intensive investigations over drug trafficking suspicions. A search in the car yielded one kilogramme of cocaine packed in 96 capsules. The two men, a 31-year-old from Marsaxlokk and a 28-tear-old Tunisian, resident of Naxxar, were immediately detained.
Later on during the evening, Customs Officials at the Malta International Airport (MIA) held a Libyan man who arrived on a flight from Tunis, Tunisia, carrying 1.5kg of heroin. The heroin was hidden in his luggage, mixed with coffee, in a bid to distract Police dogs from sniffing out the drug.
The 23-year-old Libyan man held in relation to the case has visited Malta on other occasions.
Both cases were discussed in depth by Commissioner of Police John Rizzo and Assistant Commissioner Paul Debattista responsible for the Anti-Drugs Squad in a press conference that was initially meant to tackle illegal hunting.
On Tuesday, a further 29,000 ecstasy pills were uncovered in a Qawra flat, making this week one of the most successful in the fight against drug trafficking.
The fact that these drugs were seized is encouraging, especially in the light of three drug-related deaths earlier this month.
