YMCA Malta in trouble over EU subsidies

The European Commission has started legal proceedings against YMCA Valletta whereby the charitable organisation is being asked to refund funds granted it.

Back in July, YMCA had been ordered to refund a total of €17,498.67 a judgment that is  enforceable in Malta by the Attorney General's Office.  In a judicial letter against YMCA, the EC told the First Hall of the Civil courts that in 2001, YMCA had applied for two subsidies in order to set up a project called "Violence & Under Privileged Young People" and another one called "Supporting the Homeless".

Consequently the organisation had managed to secure €13,539 in February 2001 and €6,672 in January 2002.  After the final reports had been submitted to the EC, the latter decided that certain expenses claimed by the YMCA were ineligible and it decided that YMCA should only be conceded €1,169 and €4,080 for the projects.

YMCA was then informed by the Commission’s decision and was asked to refund the difference which to date the organisation has failed to do.
