The Armed Forces of Malta rescued a total of 56 illegal immigrants on Saturday.

Italian fishing-vessel the Priamo reported a first boat with some 28 illegal migrants onboard in a position 50 nautical miles (NM) south of Malta.

A short while later, Italian tug-boat Capo Mulino informed the AFM's Operation Centre that yet another boat with another 28 illegal migrants onboard had capsized this time in their immiediate area, and that they were clutching onto the tuna-pen their tug had in tow.

The AFM's P-52 which was on its way to rescue the first boatload of immigrants was diverted towards the Capo Mulino.

By 1540 CEST, P-52 had arrived on the scene to recover the 28 migrants in distress, of whom six were females and one was also pregnant. At 1720CET, P-52 had reached the second position and recovered a second group of 28 migrants, of whom seven were females.
