Over half a million counterfeit goods seized

In the first two months of 2007, Customs officials seized 19 containers carrying over half a million counterfeit products.

false mobile phone productsAmong the products seized were wrist watches, cell phone accessories, batteries, razor blades, clothes, belts and spectacles, all bearing counterfeit brand names. The containers originated from the Far East, however the Customs Office stated that it is difficult to determine where the fake merchandise was headed. Only one container was destined for Malta. The goods will be destroyed once the legal proceedings against the perpetrators come to an end.

The Customs office said that the finds were made through intensive efforts of various sections within the department.  

The Customs office also said that it has had numerous requests for heighten protection of leading brands.

Earlier this year, Secretary General of the World Customs Michel Danet said that the production of fake good is a very serious crime which can have long-lasting effects on the economy as well as the health of citizens. The production of fake merchandise is also no longer limited to a specific group of goods and has spread to affect various products from infants’ food to aeroplane machines.
